ELSEN CLASSES

Durbanville Primary would like to develop the potential of all enrolled learners. For this purpose, we have two classes which specialize in Education for Learners with Special Educational Needs. (ELSEN).

The teacher who is responsible for the Junior class (6 - to ± 10 year olds) tutors at both the Preparatory and the Primary School. In the Senior class learners from ± 11 years and older, are taught according to their scholastic ability and special needs. Both ELSEN classes consist of a core group of learners who are intensively tutored for part of the day in their home language (A/E) as well as Mathematics. For the latter half of the day, some of the learners are exposed to main stream teaching for content and practical subjects. Evaluation with regard to content subjects will take place subjectively.

Learners with specific needs are withdrawn from main stream classes and their problem areas are addressed by the ELSEN teachers. This system makes it possible for our learners to be selected for schools e.g. Westcliffe, where the focus is on a practical career focussed curriculum.
