Circular 27/2010                                                                                                             20 May 2010

Dear Parent

SCHOOL HOURS DURING THE EXAMINATION : 31 MAY TO 8 JUNE 2010

In 2009 all the schools in our education district (EMDC) received a letter from the director, Mr B. Volschenk, regarding uniformity of school hours during the examination, as schools made their own arrangements which caused confusion.  It was a positive step to set practical guide lines.  Durbanville Primary acted pro-actively (annual planning, Circular 23/2010 with reference to the examination, dated 4 May 2010) by informing you with regard to the above-mentioned letter.  In order to ensure maximum tuition time, we decided to schedule our examination as late as possible in the second term.  This will avoid having to “create” three or more days where learners have to be kept busy with an “additional programme”.

The newly appointed education head (director general), Mrs P. Vinjevold has, however, now instructed all schools in the Western Cape, to apply the following measures from June 2010:

  • High schools may not close earlier than 13:00 during the examination.
  • Primary schools may not close earlier during the examination and in our case, not earlier than 14:00.
  • All staff members must be at the school until 15:00 (normal academic working hours).

Durbanville Primary School supports the fact that there are now uniform examination arrangements in the whole province.  Durbanville Primary will, therefore, no longer close at 13:00 during the examination (31 May to 8 June), but at the usual time, namely, 14:00.  We, hereby, also request that no high school learners (also parents) fetch primary school learners before 14:00.  The full day (08:00-14:00) will be utilised by Durbanville Primary for examination related activities.

The “new” closing time during the examination also has an effect on the Preparatory School as they have already informed their parents according to the “old” measures.  Our sincere apologies for any inconvenience which this may have caused.

Schools that do not follow the new measures, are acting against the prescribed policy.

Best wishes with all your activities.

Yours sincerely

J.C. Swart
