Circular 13/2010                                                                                                       4 March 2010

Dear Parent

DISCIPLINARY SYSTEM

You have already received information regarding our disciplinary system.  Transgressions are grouped according to the degree of severity and points are coupled to it.  Work reports are sent home to the parent/guardian.  Once a learner has accumulated six points, he/she has to attend a detention class.

Detention is, therefore, the action which follows once the learner has received various work reports.  The school views detention as a means (the most serious except a disciplinary hearing) of disciplining learners and we, therefore, expect parents to support us in this regard.  Discipline, ultimately leads to self-discipline and learners must subject themselves to this.

1.                  PROBLEMS WHICH ARE ENCOUNTERED

In the past, problems have been encountered with the detention system.  These problems arise as a result of the following:

  • Learners do not give the detention notices to their parents

  • The school sends an SMS to the parent on the Thursday before the detention class, but parent/guardian does not receive it

  • Learners ignore detention class and do not report for detention

  • Parents go away for the weekend

  • Extra-mural activities, planned well in advance, which according to the parents,  must be the first priority.

2.                  DISREGARD OF DETENTION/REPEATED DETENTION

The school views disregarding of a detention class in a very serious light and therefore, the following for your attention:

  • Learners who do not attend the detention class, will receive an extra detention, i.e. 6 points.

  • If written absence is requested (only in exceptional cases) by the parent, the grade head will use his/her discretion.  The learner will then automatically attend the next detention class.  Only one excuse will be accepted.

  • If a learner disregards a detention class for a second time, the parents must attend a disciplinary discussion comprising a panel of, the class teacher, grade head and head of department.

  • Parents of learners who have been given three detentions per term, will be contacted by the grade head to address the situation.

  • If this does not have the desired effect, the case will be reported to the governing body for a disciplinary hearing.  You will be informed in this regard.

Kind regards
