Circular 11/2008 14 February 2008
Dear Parent
CURRICULUM
In the light of negative media reports regarding the standard of education in our schools, it is understandable that you, as parents, will be concerned about the quality of education which your child is receiving.
We would like to assure you, that Durbanville Primary School keeps a close watch on the standard and quality of our education. The curriculum is carefully planned and implemented by means of thorough planning and control. The work schedules are continually revised and the assessment standards re-evaluated. The teaching of basic skills is a high priority and we are continually trying to meet the needs of the “millennium learners” in our class.
Education focuses on the teaching of knowledge, essential life skills, as well as values and attitudes. Moral values and norms form the basis of any teaching that takes place and it is continually emphasized. We also focus on Christian values and norms. By developing our learners holistically, we believe that we prepare them for future challenges.
Negative reports with regard to learners’ literacy and numeracy skills, is continually being portrayed as front page news. These statistics comprise a broad spectrum of generalizations and we can assure you that Durbanville Primary School does not form a part of these negative statistics. For the past three years our Gr 6 learners were selected randomly by the WCED to be assessed by means of external, standardized, literacy and numeracy tests. The average test results that we received were as follows:
The above indicates that our school’s results are far above the average of the province and region. Durbanville Primary School has well qualified, professional, efficient and dedicated educators. Our learners operate in a structured milieu which is conducive to learning and development. We would therefore, like to assure you that the education at Durbanville Primary School is excellent and dynamic!
Yours faithfully
